At the moment I have Virgin broadband and telephone services also virgin mobile, on a monthly contract.

I have recently received a letter from BT with the following offer, Broadband and unlimited UK calls free for the first 3 months.

They say that I will be able to enjoy unlimited calls including to 0845 and 0870 numbers plus a smart wireless home hub wireless router worth over £90 (£6 delivery charge) all for £16 per month line rental.

Have any ABers took up this offer, and would it be better than Virgin?

What do u get after the 3 months n wot will it cost? I have had BT n now Virgin. Happy with what I have n won't be going back. 0845 n 0870 r free on virgin too (at least for me).
that's funny, 'cus i have bt and virgin too. bt have rang three times recently offering it cheaper. I wasn't sure if it was a scam.
Orange have offered a good rate too, but i rang them and asked.
It just seems odd that a massive company would ring you up and say 'you're paying us too much, let us reduce it'. I mean they wouldn't do that would they? It doesn't add up to me.
Although recently I had cause to complain to BT about the drop in my Broadband speed, I feel that matters have now been put right, relatively quickly. Consequently, I am very happy with the service which is being provided and would recommend the offer which is being made to you.

The £16 per month which you have mentioned does not include line rental but does give you 10gb of Broadband per month and all your telephone calls, of each up-to one hour's duration, are for free. If you think your outgoing call is nearing the hour mark, you just terminate it and re-dial to avoid any charge for it going over the hour.

I have paid for my line rental as a twelvemonths in advance and that cost me £120. Consequently, if you were to do as I have done, the cost to you per month would be £26 for free telephone calls and 10gb Broadband download; which I find is more than adequate for my purposes. Furthermore if I were nearing the the 10gb limit, BT would send me an E/mail and I could arrange immediately for a further 5gb's at the cost of £5 being added to my quarterly bill. Normally one is not charged for the first instance that one exceeds the Broadband allowance.

Having quickly read through what I have said is making me appear as a salesman for BT. I assure you that I am not ....Just a satisfied customer who is aware that, whatever direct line Broadband supplier you have, a BT Telephone Exchange will be involved in downloads arriving at your computer.

Quite honestly, I would not choose BT for anything because in my experience they do not keep their promises. They try hard to get you to sign up, then you can easily find the conditions under which you signed up being changed without any notice or explanation until you complain on receipt of a surprise in the billing - then the answer will be "Tough" and even the equivalent of "We lied", as I found out. Your three month free thing is probably for a broadband connection that will have a very low download allowance and as soon as you have exhausted it (as you very likely will) then the fees pile up at a punitive rate. BT management have adopted a spivvy approach to business, or so it seems to me.
I can't agree KARL... BT changed my contract from 18 months to a twelvemonth and because, I already had BT Broadband, a nominal amount of £1. per month was knocked off my bill. Furthermore, I was told that I would get a download speed of 5000kbps and most of the time it is in excess of that figure.

I think that package is £16 a month PLUS line rental.

It wouldn't be a good deal for this household because it has a 10Gb download limit (and then £1 per gigabyte over that limit) and the speed would be between 4 and 8Mb. With Virgin we have no download limit and 20Mb speed, which is nice as both I and the kids use things like Youtube, Iplayer, 4OD and the rest.

Now, if BT Infinity was available here it would be a different matter.
I would never choose BT on price alone as in the long run you pay more. I also got those BT offer leaflets but threw them in the bin.

The only possible advantage of being with BT is they intend to cover the country with fibre optic cable and their customers would obviously get first choice. However I believe Virgin are also looking into it.
I have been with BT Broadband for several years now (home hub includes) and I wouldn't consider changing - we're pleased with them.
from my experience, two tin cans and a nit of string is better than virgin.
Huderon.... You are correct...as I mentioned in an earlier posting, the £16 pm does not include line rental. However, it would be interesting to know what it costs you for what seems to be a good service.

Incidentally, a relative of mine was telling me only last Saturday that he was getting difficulties with his Broadband provider (O2 I think) who was blaming BT for a loss of speed and BT didn't want to know on the basis that it was not the actual service provider only the line connector.

Personally, I feel that dealing with a single entity such as BT does not allow one firm to play things off against another.

I am however rather confused regarding the £16, I thought that this was the line rental, if not how much is the total cost?
AOG, I if I were you I would ring 151 or 150 then (press 1) go to the BILL then press 5 to get to the "leaving stage" operator,
Tell her/him what BT are offering and that you are seriously thinking about it.
You will get a reduction as they don't want you to leave.
Sorted mine out last month.

AOG...Obviously I didn't make it clear in my initial posting. £16 per month is for 10gb Broadband plus all free telephone calls of up to 1hr's duration. Line rental is additional.

Please read again my original posting because I mentioned about cutting line rental costs and the total cost per month for everything you may require.

I was on bt option 1 for almost 5 years giving me 10gb internet usage per month for £15.40 plus calls. My router is a voyager 210...it broke...voyager 210 is obsolete...long phone calls to bt call centres, the result is a brand new home hub, option 2 advanced security AND 40gb of usage per month for a reduced £13.00 per month.I call that a result....-:-)
