Is there anything I can do to make the screen lighter when utside in the garden?

Use it under a brolly/parasol/gazebo.

Try putting the laptop screen in some shade to make it better to see. There not realy designed for out door weather.

I've tried that Answerprancer ... thanks anyway! There should be some button that zaps a bit of light on. Just had a thought! I'll change the text size! Thank you!

And dont do what someone I knew in the States did - sit outside during a lightening storm mucking around on his pc.

It was the rain water that knackered the pc - and then the lightening strike on the house also fried his laptop.

There is a brightness control. look for a couple of keys with extra pictures of suns on them (normally either one of the function (F) keys along the top or one of the arrow keys) then hold down the FN key (bottom left of keyboard) and use the keys with suns on them to adjust the brightness.
