losing apps on my i phone

Hi
the first time I plugged my i phone into my laptop I lost all the apps and had to download them again, just want to plug it in again to update my music but don't want it to happen again, does anyone know if this was a one off as it was the first time \I had plugged it in or will it happen again if so how can I stop it
