Increase Volume in Video Files

Is there a program available to download - preferably free - that can increase the volume in video files? I have downloaded files but the volume is too low. And yes, before anyone asks, I have turned up my speakers.

Use a program like 'virtualdub' to demux the sound and then increase its volume in a sound editing program. I use 'Soundforge', but it's not free. Then remux with virtualdub. There is loads of information on this here:

ps windows can also control volume and by default the volume is set at half so u could check the volume in sound mixer programs/accessories/entertainment/sound volume
