I'm currently using Norton, but my yearly subscription is due for renewal. Any hints or clues for a cheaper but effective alternative?
Thanks in advance

Top two here. AVG and Avast. See reviews.

Why didn't you just ask me, dopey?

I used the free version of AVG and it served me much better than that Norton crap ever did.
Note that the Norton you have is probably a full security suite, NOT just anti-virus.

So replacing a full security suite with JUST anti virus is not a good idea.

You should make sure you have a firewall, anti virus and anti malware software at least.

p.s. despite what NoMercy says Norton is NOT crap. The latest release is very good.
I use McAfee but if you change to anything removing Norton is a real pain!
You need to use their special removal program because it is all over your PC.
Old Norton not too good. Newer Nortons are fine.
Old ones needed you to stop the relevant services in Windows ... New one uninstall cleanly.
Use a late version like 2010 or 2011.

Mjwman .. you don't half talk cr@p sometimes.
If you need free .. there's no better than Microsoft SE at the moment Bob.
PS Cheaper to remove old Norton and buy a new one online.
2010 NAV: £14 for 1 year, 2x PC's was what I bought recently.
