It is all down to personal choice - my idea of 'best' will be another person's idea of rubbish.

However, the following are good free programs:
Firewall:
http://www.filehippo.com/download_zonealarm_fr ee/

Antivirus:
http://www.filehippo.com/download_avg_antiviru s/

Antispyware:
http://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/download/
AND
http://www.filehippo.com/download_ad-aware/

That should see you okay
Another option

is Comodo Firewall which is free

http://www.filehippo.com/download_comodo/

I found this easy to use although for the first couple of days it does keep asking permission to allow entry to sites until it "learns" your useage

Also for free antivirus I find Avast works well

Ad-aware and spybot are also good antispyware programmes.

So you can see , with Ethels comments, there are several free options. I personally have had no problems using these free programmes.

Eth is right ... we'll never agree - rubbish ;-)

seriously
It depends on your habits ...free is eithe complete rubbish ... or a cut-down version of a decent package
(having said that - the comercial version of avg gets pretty grim reviews as well;(

free tends to be worth every penny - better than nowt (which is what it's worth) - but only just

if you bank and go where no vicar would go ... I'd say a bought all in one package is a better bet

as the others rightly its personal opinion. best to check a great site called MATOUSEC it might help to decide I have changed from zone alarm to online armour firewall on their test results
I can only go on my own experience. Never used 'paid for' security software and never had a security problem on any of my systems.
most of these are free, ethel, like you i have never paid for security
some of these are free, ethel, like you i have never paid for security
Or do you mean security software for managing access to your home/office? I.e Door access
you know my view on personal experience ... best kept to yourself.

sorry people but in this context it's just not valid ... imagine the scientific or medical community working on something a lass down at tesco saw last week ...

On this subject I know absolutely nothing .... or more accurately ... I know how little I know.

just like going to the doctor ... you hope that the people who are supposed yo know ... actually do
and in this case .... "they" are the security consultants..

The mags (every UK mag I've seen in the last 6 months) rate Kaspersky as number one ....
(I trust them ... because they are in a position to actually test the packages on infected machines) - they have a reputation to maintain ... and I don't know enough to prove it myself

their opinion Is based on controlled tests ...
and also consideration that it's almost certainly going to be used by a non expert.

last week I bought some elephant repellent down the market ... the bloke assured me that it worked ... and sure enough I've not seen an elephant since ... worth 1000 of anyone's money .... interested?
Ive been using BitDefender for a while now and it is AntiSpy/Virus and Spam. A lot of other retailers have been going over to it as well, probably cause they get a back hander when its renewed, but it is very good and you get 2 years not 1 for a very reasonable cost of about 15 and you can use it on 2 pc's as well.
PC Pro magazine has a review of about a dozen security suites this month (have not got it yet so cannot tell you who won)

Here is their web site, although details of the latest reviews are not there yet (to encourage you to buy the magazine).

Here is the review they did of security suites back in late 2007, which of course is now out of date, but it may help

http://www.pcpro.co.uk/labs/160/security-suite s/products.html

Kaspersky won.
Whoops, forgot to put a link directly to the PC Pro web site

http://www.pcpro.co.uk/
mmmm interesting ... it wasn't Kaspersky....
time to rethink my recommendation

It's my other fav (and for the cheapskates it also has a free antivirus version)
AVIRA http://www.avira.com/en/download/index.html

they have some other great free progs also
http://www.free-av.com/en/download/index.html
Avira Boot Sector Repair Tool
Avira UnErase Personal
Avira NTFS4DOS Personal
all part of my toolkit
