Have you checked the Virgin status page for your area?

If there is no problems in your area, switch everything off at the mains. Wait at least a full minute before switching the modem on.

Wait again for the lights to settle down, and turn the pc on.

Hopefully this will reset everything.

Pc has now crashed nothing on screen and monitor keeps turning off

i had this prob seemed to be a trojan despite having all the relavant spyware adaware avg and zone alarm etc
i rantedat the isp they said no fault at their end and true enough there wasn't i did a reinstall of xp (was due its bi yearly one anyway ) problem fixed

by the way i always back up all the things i want off "c" driveon to my seperate hard drive
