my xmas laptop!

got a laptop for xmas but dont know how to get it onto the internet. ive managed to install the norton until the activation stage as you need to be online for that. what do i do/ there are so many cables. im on my desktop at mo. do i need to take the modem from this and add it to the laptop? i thought a laptop had a built in modem??? will that mean that i'll have to carry the modem about with me? bet this sounds really pathetic but its all new to me. please someone help! oh, also i have broadband on this pc and want to keep the same e-mail etc..is this poss?
