I have a slight problem, my modem is taking up 75% of my bandwidth, my computer needs 24% thus leaving 1% for my webcam. I was told that in order to correct this problem i would need a self powered USB hub. I have now got a self powered hub and the problem still exists. Can anyone make another suggestion. If i disconnect my modem, get the camera working then reconect my modem this works, but i was hoping for a more simpler solution rather than a mundane resolution like if it works why bother

Do you mean USB bandwidth ? I assume that you do.

Buying a powered USB will make no difference as you have found.

What version of USB are you using ?

Could you possibly change your Internet connect from USB to Ethernet ?

What are you PC specifications ? What operating system are you using ?

BillyNoMates, Thanks for the reply, i am using usb 2.0 connection my comp is AMD(tm) Athlon 64 processor 3200+.
1.01 Ghz 512 Mb Ram. Running Xp Home Edition Service Pack 2. Appreciate if you can help. I cannot change to ethernet. Sorry to take time replying, on night shift JimP
I am still assuming that you mean USB bandwidth ?

Can you confirm where you are getting your figures from ?

How are your USB devices connected - to individual USB ports on the PC ? I know you have tried a powered hub which would have taken 1 USB port on the PC.

I am thinking that it may be worthwhile investing in a 4 port USB 2.0 PCI card - they are about 20.

BillyNomates, I have my modem connected to one usb port and mouse, pda sync and webcam connected by usb on the 4-port hub. Previously when my modem was connected and i tried to view my webcam a balloon appeared saying 'usb controller bandwidth exceeded click this to solve the problem, after clicking that is where it says the modem requires 75%, System needs 14% and system requires 10%. Your webcam requires 13%, please either disconnect something or move the device to another usb that is not being allocated. I hope that is of use, honestly i've been on thiss now for about a month before i decided to seek help elsewhere. JIm P
OK - that makes sense.

So the question is how many USB ports does the PC itself actually have forgetting about the hub ?

Can you use your mouse as a PS2 connected device instead of USB ?

Depending upon the answer, I think a 4 or 2 port USB2 card would be the solution.

BillyNoMates, Thank you for the advice, my mouse has to be uSB conection, but i will purchase a card and see how that works. I will tell you the outcome, thanks for all your time and advice it nice to know thaere are people out who take the time to help one another. Ragards JimP
I would go with a PCI USB2.0 card - I bought a Belkin version for around 20 recently.

This should solve the problem.

Good Luck !
