My printer (Canon i560) is not printing out - Help!

My Canon i560 bubble jet printer is suddenly not working: When I set it to print, it goes through the motions and makes all the right noises but nothing comes out on the paper. When I set it to do a print head check, a pattern does print out and I have also tried cleaning the heads via the maintenance system ... but no documents appear on paper and I have tried several times. I have also checked that the cartridges all contain ink and that is not the problem. I would be really grateful for any suggestions.

I should add that I have realised that it is only the black ink cartridge which is not printing .. and yet I have out a new one in and cleaned the head. It is printing out in colour. Does anyone think it is because I am not using a Canon cartridge but a compatible one ... even though I have used them before?
