Hope this is the right place to ask this question. I have a laptop which I use on my lap. This get a bit hot on my legs and I wondered if this would do me any harm. I use it most nights for different things but wonder if it is safe to use it like this. Also any suggestions how to cool it down.

that sounds painfull. Its odd they are called laptops if its not really a good idea to use them like this.

you could get one of those cushioned lap top trays, they are basically a tray with a cushion attached to the underside. this would keep the lap top cooler too as there is a gap between the surface and laptop base.

if you cant find one in the shops, (those catalogues you get advertising stuff for the elderly or infirm of sell these as tea trays) you could make one by sticking to the two togther (don't try to balance as the tray may slide off if you move)

alternatively a flat cushion, similar to what you attach to chairs would be fine on it own

I use one of those cushioned lap trays that joko describes (think it's originally designed for hot plates!).  My Mum actually got it from a car boot sale and when I saw it whilst visiting I asked if I could have it for my laptop! :)  Since the cover is hard it also allows adequate ventilation to the laptop.

thanks the tray looks like it could be the answer. I have tried  a cushion but that got hot and I was a bit worried about that. I will look for a tray next time I go into townl.

Thanks

Try 'laptop cooler' on ebay search
I had the same problem, until browsing on ebay I saw something called a laptop cooler pad from www.simply.co.uk and it's brilliant. It contains some sort of heat absorption gel so it protects your legs plus it keeps the laptop cool. I am not sure how much they cost new because I bid on ebay for mine.

Just tried the link I gave you and it takes you to misco and it looks like they don't sell the laptop cooler pads, only the hard coolers with fans in them. Sorry I couldn't help.

Oh! if you do a search on ebay make sure you use the word pad because if you just put laptop cooler you will get thousands of the hard coolers with fans which are mostly shipped from the far east from power sellers who start their auctions at 1p and then charge a fortune for P&P. If no  luck on ebay try Amazon.

cherrybomb I tried that link with no joy also tried e-bay but they only had the ones with fans. They say they are quiet but as I use it in the lounge I don't know how quiet and it can be annoying if someone is watching tv. I have seen them advertised in the states but I can't find them in the uk.
I also have one of these pads and wouldn't like to be without it. However, see today's posting from kempie. I put details of the pad on this site ages ago - Simply don't do it now, It originally came from Sweden but they charge quite a lot for it direct. The pad has 'Climator' and 'Climsel' on it if you want to do a Google search.

Looked up the old posting. Website is http://www.climator.com/passivecooling.html
