I didn't really know him but we had a few drink one afternoon in the Club Bar on University Road. The bar was nearly empty after the lunchtime drinkers left but as the day wore on the people who came in sort of gravitated around him. He had loads of yarns and was, as they say great craic.

do you mean the actor, he of Z cars.
i gather he died today, good actor.
He was also a zoo keeper in a prog that I can't remember the name of.

"In answer to the query on page 3 issue 817. The programme being filmed by the BBC was called One By One. The zoo keeper in question is James Ellis, best known for his part as Bert (Paddy) Lynch in Z Cars. Other locations included Chester Zoo and Knowsley Safari Park."
Oh, i used to love One by One :-(
I am sorry to hear he has died, I remember him in both those programmes. May he rest in peace.
Another name from my childhood has sadly passed away.
In terms of recognisabke, on-screen British TV coppers he was second only to Dixon of Dock Green IMHO.

RIP.
Z cars was required viewing, we watched it avidly, loved Brian Blessed and James Ellis, didn't they drive Ford Anglias ?
in the programme...

He appeared in a lot more than I realised, Only Fools and Horses, In Sickness and in Health and with Kenneth Branagh in 'Too Soon To Talk to Billy' trilogy
I think they did drive them and Collin Welland was in it too.
i remember Colin Welland, another good actor

Yes Emmie, loved Stratford Johns in that too I hope my memory is serving me right
James Ellis would probably want to be remembered primarily as a director and secondly as a poet but I'm sure that most people ('of a certain age') will still remember him best as Bert Lynch

Yes he was along with Frank Windsor, they were in the follow on Softly Softly.
always remember him from Z cars,
Anyone remember D C Lockhart. Whose side kick was Johnny Briggs aka Mike Baldwin. Gawd I'm showing my age.
Stratford Johns, Frank Windsor, they were fine actors, and a very good programme, alongside Softly Softly.
emmie Don't think they did. I think they had the bigger Fords (Zephyr/Zodiac). I'm not even sure if this was the 'meaning of 'Z' cars either!!
could be, it was a while back, and the memory is not what is was, sorry what was i saying... x
