Facebook - Settings Help

On the old facebook, you could either let everybody see your page, friends etc or just see your photo, then they would have to Ask to be your friend, then they could see all on your page, friends etc. Have tried putting settings on Friends Only, but others can still see all on my page. Does the old setting no longer exist? Also am getting a Virtual Person who keeps sending me messages, how can I stop them from sending me messages?
