Don't think there is one.
You can use copy and paste to do as I did.
What is a 'tick'? Do you mean like 'checking' a box in an application?
Try this using the ALT key and......

http://www.alt-codes.net/
start / accessories / system tools / character map.
Pick a font, search for a tick.

It'll proabbaly tell you the keyboard code too.
Old G, you are right. That never occurred to me.
To find a 'true' tick

In Word, select Insert, Symbol from the menu bar. The character map will open.

Change the Font: drop down box to Wingdings and then scroll down to the bottom of the grid. The tick is fourth from the right on the bottom row.
✔ just click and paste from here http://copypastecharacter.com/our-favorite-set
alt + 251 is pretty near. But 'alt +' symbols don't work on AB.
BibbleB, that a neat site. Thanks
society - it just makes it that little bit simpler and most commonly used chars are there
bibble - I must be missing something. There are not many symbols and I cannot find a tick . . . .
Fabulous site, Bibblebub. That'll come in very handy for me. Thanks a bunch. x
There is a square root symbol in the Mathematical Category - but no tick
sir.prize - on the link that i gave the tick is 8th on the 2nd row (just click on it to copy it to the clipboard) and there is a drop-down list of other available symbol sets if you click on Our favorite set
Thanks bibble - 8th is a square with the numbers 26 above IE.

When I .click on it and then paste all I get is a blank square . . . strange

I am aware of the other symbol sets thanks
hmm... the IE that you get might be a clue but when i click on that link and view the page in Firefox, Chrome or Opera it displays as I suggest ( I have turned off IE and can't be bothered to turn it back on just to test that)
The IE is purely coincidental and nothing to do with the Internet Explorer.

I am using firefox and this is what I am getting

have a look here...

Usually, alt + 252 (but I wouldn't guarantee this) !!
