Trying to have a bit of a clear out, in my Add/Remove I have three Java TM 6 Updates, Update 2, Update 3 and Update 5. Do I need all these? Each of them is 111.00MB. Also I have Microsoft Photo Premium which is 413.00 MB. What is it for ?? And if I don't need them, do I just use the delete facility ??

Java - remove all but the latest. Java doesn't install the updated bits, it installs the whole thing every time. I'm forever deleting older versions.

The Photo Premium is photo editing software:

If you don't need it, remove it.
Update 5 is the latest. Remove the others for they are security holes.
because they are updates there shouldn't be a need to un-install.
but if you feel more comfortable doing so ... remove the old (this is just for java) and then install the latest update.

there is no security hole (any greater than any one else's) because part of the purpose of updates is to plug such holes.

in all cases NEVER - EVER just use the delete option on a program
when you install a windows program the majority of the files will end up in the program folder....
however some progs require some of their files to be located in the windows system folders - and almost all will make changes to the registry.

just deleting the program folder leaves all this detritus on your system and in some cases leaves entries which will attempt to start services which are not there and can lead to instability.

always use the uninstall option which is either
in the program's start menu folder
or use add remove programs which lives in control panel (XP)

or in vista its still control panel ... but look in programs and features
services trying to start

Thanks everyone, especially TROLL, you have made it clear to a non-techie. I will go into Control Panel Add/Remove and delete them. Also somewhere I have old AOL files, PFCs and AOL8 etc. Where can I find them and can I delete them as well? Some have my screen names on, what are they ?
