Everybody knows the idea that Mexicans put a square or two of rich bitter dark chocolate in their chilli con carnes, but in Ol' Blighty does anyone bother? Is it just an urban myth and in fact chocolate will ruin the chilli?

I’ve heard this too but I’ve never tried it x
I’ve done it sometimes. Doesn’t make a big difference.
I've made chill with chocolate and it is good.
I used to put chocolate in - it cancels out the acidity of the tomatoes. A teaspoon of sugar does the same thing.
Chilli con carne is tex mex not really Mexican. In Mexico it's carne con chile and has chunks of meat rather than minced and they don`t put chocolate in it.
It's called Mole Sauce lots of recipes on line. Had some good ones when in Texas
They don't put tomatoes in it, either, so no need for chocolate :)
Three ingredients I always include...cocoa powder, ground cumin and oregano.
I do every time I make it... it is very tasty and does improve the chilli. Use very dark chocolate though.
