iPad email picture not opening

My wifes iPad has stopped opening pictures that are emailed from her friends. She just gets a small blue box with a question mark in it. Even photos she has previously looked at show this box and will not open. Has she changed a setting somewhere? Help! I may have to have a conversation with her if it is not sorted ;-)

I get this on my smartphone, but sometimes it says "open attachments" so I do and they appear.
