Gremlin in the keyboard

I recently experimented by installing a German keyboard - it has a slightly different layout and contains umlauts etc.- I didn't like it and reverted to my English one, everything is back as it was except the @ and " symbols have become reversed ( as they are on a German keyboard ) any ideas why this should be please?

Keyboard is UK, but operating system set to US - or vice versa

English keyboards have the double quote above the 2. US keyboards have the @ above the 2. As Vagrant says, you need to set your keyboard in the control panel to match your physical keyboard.
