HI, I have Sygate firewall so I don't know about McAfee but you may have a McAfee icon bottom right near the clock? Right click that icon and you may get some options regarding the controlled applications and, if so, then you should be able to either Allow or Block the applications when contacting the Internet.
Obviously, Internet Explorer should be "Allowed".
Do the icons on the desk top relating to any applications work OK? Such as your image editing program or Window Media player???
Incidentally, just add your reply to the bottom of this entry.

Hi, None of the icons come up, windows media says cant perform, operation low memory.. Google Earth says sorry could not open browser. I right clicked on McAfee and got into properties but nothing about allowing or blocking
Hi Gulliver, don't bother with the icons on the desk top at the moment.
Go to Start (bottom left corner), then "All programs" and try to start any program from the list. Does it open up OK and run as it should???

no I cant get anything up at all, its as if I'm not on line but I know I am because I have a laptop working perfect. I think I must have blocked something. I cant even do restore to a different date as it won't come up....
You say you have a lap top working fine on the Internet?? and yet you can't get any programs to start up and run?? How many computers are we talking about here?
One, or two??
I've just come across your first posting and now realise that you are using the words "desk top" to mean both the desk top where the icons are and also for your desk top computer??? You have two computers and the lap top is connected to the Internet but the desk top computer isn't. Is that right?

Sorry Wak, I have a desk top computer and a laptop computer both fed by a wireless router, the laptop is working o.k. but the desk top or tower is not responding to the internet, can I go into settings or something and unblock something, I am not a computer wiz kid so don't even know how to set my 'Settings' correctly
Presumably the laptop is the main comp as it is working OK.?
Click START, SETTINGS, CONTROL PANEL, NETWORK CONNECTIONS and see if there is a connection in there which has been disabled.
Try the above with both comps. there should be a connection or gateway from the main comp to the slave.
I used to have two comps connected together a long time ago but I'm a bit rusty on that side of it now.
See how you go with the above.

Thanks Wak I have done what you said, there doesn.t seem to be a connection at all.the service provider came out to check the connection as we have a satalite connection he said the connection is ok
we are going to try to reinstall windows and run a anti spyware and see what happens.
it's a mystery..thanks for all your help.
Hi Gulliver, Just been rooting in a computer drawer and came across an "Ethernet to USB adaptor" and I remembered that this used to be plugged into a USB socket at the back of my Desk top comp and an Ethernet connector from the other (secondary) computer used to plug into this adaptor.
It was this USB/Ethernet LAN adaptor that needed to be accepted/allowed by the Firewall on both computers. However. I am with Virgin Media and a set-top box so your set-up will probably be different to mine.
Sorry I couldn't be of more assistance.
Incidentally, in the Settings, Control panel, Network connections there is a "connection wizard".
Have you tried that?
