Can i take the old hard drive from my old pc and fit it as a second unit to my new pc running xp home as it has items i need ? thanks .

You can ... so long as there is a connector ... IDE or SATA for it. Reformat NTFS. You can do that in Windows: Afer a reboot with drive connected as a slave ... Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Disc Management You can format there.
P.S. Reformat after you get your needed files, of course! Otherwise, they'll be gone!

No worries.
Why not just copy the files from your old computer to a memory stick, then put the memory stick in your new computer and copy the files off it onto your new PC.
