anti-virus recommendations

my three month anti-virus is going to expire soon. can i download a new anti-virus free off the internet, and are they any good?
at present i´ve got a norton. someone sugegested a not sure of the spelling "kapersky"
this is for my laptop computer

It does depend on if you want to pay or not.

The free security packages are very good value for money but they normally have less features than the paid for packages and don't normally fare so well in the detection tests.

IMHO the best free package is Commodo

And the best paid for packages are kasparsky and Norton (yes they really have improved it that much recently!)

hi i just looked at kapersky on the internet. theres the all in 1 internet security for 39.99 quid, or the 29.99 anti-virus plus 4.99 for extended download.
i only use my laptop for this website, emailing mates, and some surfing. so which one should i go for?
If you look around .. you can do a download install of Norton 2010 AV with license code up to 3-pcs with 2 years, all updates, incl support for £15. I have just found twice for two customers to replace what I think is over-rated AVG Free.

albags...i have looked around, apart from carboots, i havent found anything cheaper than 30quid plus p&p for 1 year only,any chance of telling me where i will find the 15 quid for 2years deal
