Internet Explorer Bug Fix Please

On two occasions now, when I try to close Internet Explorer using the 'x' gadget at the top right of the Explorer window, instead of closing, it rapidly opens more tabs with my default home page on them. I try to end the program using Task Manager but Explorer replicates itself faster than I can shut it down. I'm then left with having to shut the computer down with everything open. This happened in December and on the 14th of January - I don't know what date it happened in December. Maybe it's a date-activated virus. It's got past McAfee anyway. I did a complete scan and no bugs were found. Any ideas as to how I can fix it?

Try googling for malwarebytes. A quick system scan should clear it up.
I dont know if this will help!
XP. Right clk on My Computer and choose Properties>Clk on Advanced tab.>Clk Settings under Startup and Recovery untick the option Automatically restart. Clk OK.
Now if Windows crashes while running you will now see an error message displayed.
