I have Ubuntu on my PC as a separate partition from Windows XP. XP I understand, Ubuntu I don't, so is there a sensible book written in good simple English available?

There is a Dummies Guide to Ubuntu.
Ubuntu Unleashed is an excellent book in a less 'dummy' format.
See what your local library has.
Ubuntu pocket guide is available free from their homepage. I find it helpful

found the site I got mine from - http://ubuntupocketguide.com/
The Ubuntu forums are pretty good too...

But the best resource at your disposal is by far the internet in general, Google is you friend

just make sure you have no important data stored on the partition that Ubuntu is on, then you have no fear of playing with it because if you break it just reinstall!

Many thanks for your answers. My local library service has nothing useful but I will investigate the other solutions and am sure I will find something..
