When I open outlook express I get a list of emails showing who they are from and what the subject is.To the left of the From there is a scrunched up symbol. It's between another symbol that i don't recognise and a small flag.

I think if you click on them they put your emails into a different order, though I also am unsure what they actually mean.
In the default layout of Outlook Express there are 3 columns to the left of 'From'.

The first column shows the 'Priority' of the message. This is usually blank but if the person sending you the message has marked it as 'High priority', you'll see a red exclamation mark. If they've marked it as 'Low priority', you'll see a blue arrow pointing down. If you want to group your messages in order of priority, click on the little exclamation mark at the top of the column. That will place the highest priority messages either at the top or bottom of the list, depending how many times you click the symbol. (To indicate the priority of an outgoing message, so that the recipient will see the relevant symbol, click on the 'Priority' button on the New Message pane).

The second column shows attachments. Whenever a message has an attachment, a small paper clip will appear in this column. You can group all messages with attachments together by clicking on the 'paper clip' which heads the column. (Once again, they'll move between the top and bottom of the list depending upon how many times you click).

The third column is the 'Flag' column. You might have loads of messages in your Inbox which you don't want to delete. However, there could be some which you want to label as 'requiring action', so that you can quickly find them among the hundreds of other messages. If you click in the 'Flag' column, alongside a relevant message, a little red flag will appear. (Click again to remove it). You can also do the same from the message pane by going to Message > Flag Message. If you want all of the flagged messages to appear at either the top or the bottom of the list, click on the little flag, which heads the column, until your messages are in the right order.
