This is a windup, right?

Why would your computer care what number you were dialling FROM?

And do you really imagine that if it did, you would need to do a complete reinstall of the operating system just to change it?

no not a wind up.
i thought it did matter being on a dial up connection, from your bt line.
answer me this then.
when i do move home why have i got to inform tiscali about my move, which then takes them 10 days before i can go back online.
Are you sure you're on dial-up?

If you're on broadband, Tiscali need to know your telephone number because essentially (in very simplistic terms) they provide a direct connection from your line. However if you're on dial-up, you just dial the provider's local pop, and you can do that from any phone line. Looking at the Tiscali site, I can't find any mention of a dial-up service (that's not to say that they don't offer one).

But either way, your computer doesn't need to know your home phone number
