media playe not working properly??

hi im trying to watch a vdeo on my media player but its not in speed with audio tried with nero and that isn either infac the whole comp tends to av slow patches now and again, i have defragmented and disk clean up but no luck, i have a laptop with vista not sure what media player it is but should i download a different one?and do i delete the old one? any ideas welcome
