My amber light shows it is receiving a wireless signal from my router.,

If I push the light in firmly it disconnects the wifi connection and goes out,

Mine is an Acer.

Maybe your computer is actually going into standby mode. Try turning it on and then press and hold the power button till it shuts off. Then see what that light does.
I've read Neil's explanation in the manual. Check your manual to see what it said.

Problem happening when running on Battery power. OK when running on Mains power.
Question Author
Battery icon shows 100% charged.
Got to control panel and open "power options". look under the power schemes tab and see if "portable/laptop" is selected. It should be. Then go to the Advanced tab and at the bottom you will see the power buttons box. There is a drop down box labeled "When I press the power botton on my computer" Do you have shut down selected?
Question Author
I'll try that, peanut, then if that doesn't work it's back to where it was bought, tomorrow.!!
Many thanks to you all for your help and have a Happy New Year.
You too.
Question Author
Tried it,peanut, but did you mean "Shut Down" should be selected?
Mine is. How are you shutting down? It seems that You are actually putting it in standby mode. When you turn it back on does it go through all the motions of starting or does it pretty much come straight to your desktop?
Question Author
Goes through the all the motions.
new machine ..... I assume the OS is vista

the "switch off" button (the red one - that in the old days was the power off symbol) is now the sleep button .... which almost certainly will cause some sort of indicator to tell you that it's on ... but not fully awake.

I know this is an unconventional suggestion ..... but have you thought of reading the manual that came with the machine .... it's funny - the sort of stuff they put in them sometimes is useful.

certainly admitting to reading the manual is less embarassing that storming into the shop .... and being told that that's what is supposed to happen ("didn't you read the manual!? sir/madam)
Question Author
Its a new machine as I stipulated I wanted XP2. Obviously I've read the manual but everything I've tried doesn't help.Only waffles on about recharging Battery, which, as I have previously said, shows 100% fully charged.I am rapidly coming to the conclusion it is faulty,so if you can give me any help before I go back to shop, that would be appreciated. It is a Hewlett Packard machine.(1Gb.Memory and 200Gb.HD.)

P.S.,AC, the troll,if you are genuinely interested in helping me,please try not to be so patronising and sarcastic.(I am certainly no idiot) ManyThanks.
hey ever ....I gave you the info you requested.....

You still haven't confirmed the os
(as I stipulated I wanted XP2 - did you get it? - if so ... home or pro?)
if XP - the state is standby niot sleep ... again expect to see some indication that the machine is on power ... but not operational

you still haven't given the model number (at risk of sounding sarcastic or patronising ... HP do make more than one model!)

If all that is at issue is a flashing light ..... it's unlikely that the machine is faulty - as said b4 ... it's almost certainly something to do with the power state the machine is in.
as peanut said quite early on and neil questioned and figure confirmed

a cursory flip through a couple of old HP manuals seems to confirm this ~(never saw any waffle in the book .... maybe I didn't read it as carefully as you!

as to your very last statement ... I didn't say you were ....perhaps your inability to work backwards from all the clues just makes you just sound as if you are.

happy new year ....

The model is HP Compaq 6715s. XP Pro. Sorry if I'm a bit edgy but I am so bloody frustrated with it.!!(Not quite ready to throw it out of the window yet, though.)!!
Question Author
Thanks so much AC the troll and others who helped me.
It looks as though the battery is faulty as Icon shows 100% remaining.Back to the Store it goes.!!
