how do i add and remove icons on the tool bar for short cuts

Do you mean the Quick Launch area, usually found on the left hand side at the bottom?

If so, adding an icon can be achieved by "right dragging an existing icon, drop it on the Quick Launch area, left click on Create Shortcut here".

Deletion is simply the matter of "right clicking on the icon you want to delete, then left clicking on the Delete option".
