I work broadband on the only telephone line that comes into the house. If my wife acquires a computer of her own, also on broadband, can we use the same line for both?

Yes. A router will distribute the signal to several computers either by wired connection or by wireless connection. I have one telephone line, four computers run off it and two different telephone numbers.
If you have ADSL broadband (through your phone line), you want something like this:
