What new operating system?

Check the obvious stuff first -- is the speaker cable plugged into the proper jack on the back of the PC? There's often 3, with only one being the right one. And also check the volume isn't muted.

Someone put their version of Windows on my computer and it wouldn't validate it (obviously!) I have bought a genuine Windows XP and installed it but have no sound. The volume is on and all cable connected properly.
Did you format the hard drive before installing the operating system. If you did have you reinstalled the motherboard drivers which will include drivers for sound

I have formatted before installing but I don't have the motherboard drivers disc. Can I download a driver from the internet? If so how do I find out which one I want?
You need to know the type of motherboard installed in your pc. Then you can go to the manufacturers website to download them.

As a check to see if this your problem go to

START > control panel >performance and maintenance > system > hardware > device manager.

Look at the list and you will have an exclamation mark against the problem device
Why did you buy a new system ? Why not simply buy a validation key from Microsoft ?
Question Author
I didn't know that!
Question Author
I've tried what you suggested Paul, but there isn't any exclamation marks against anything in there!
