You need to know what program was used to create the attachment. Maybe your friend has some old program that is not on your computer - or you have a new one that is not on theirs.

Knowing the file suffix (eg .doc) could help.
sounds like the file type isn't known on your PC, as dzug says.

I have this problem at work sometimes, depending on whic PC I am using. Usually, it's a powerpoint file (.pps) and I haven't got powerpoint installed on one of my computers.

PS - there are (free) programs that will open .pps files other than microsoft.
Open ofiice? not really sure cos I've never used it
Surely it would be a simple matter to mail your friend and ask her in which program she created the attachment?

There are many expensive programs that have free players available on the Net.

Also check that your computer has a Flash player, as well as the Powerpoint player mentioned above.
I had an identical problem with an email my friend sent me from her works pc. It would not open for me because it was something to do with 'excel' which I don't have. I eventually found it opened with 'open office.org2.0'
