I've set up a home network and can transfer files, use two printers etc between my two computers. However, if one person is sitting at each computer using different applications/games, what's the best way of pinging a message from one to the other?

An Instant Messenger such as MSN, Skype or Google chat.
Those solutions will certainly work, but seem just a wee bit over the top for use on a LAN. Have a look at these free solutions:

Rojash, many thanks for the link. Have you had any experience of any of the prgrammes? Which would you suggest I try.
