I'm not sure I understand you.

A hard drive is an internal and integral part of the laptop, which isn't inserted.

Unless you have an external hard drive which connects by usb port.

Do you mean the cd or dvd drive?

sorry what i mean is when i insert a disc in the harddrive at the side of my machine what slides open, it dosent always recognize it,
That is not your hard drive - that is your cd or dvd drive.

If you try to play dvds in a cd drive, it won't work.

Some drives don't read re-writables.

Go to Start - My Computer

It will tell you what sort of drives you have, whether it is dvd or cd. Then we can try and find the problem.

right it says dvd/cd-rw drive, got mixed up with hard drive said i dont know what im on about ha!
Ok - in 'my computer' right click on the drive and click properties.

Then click the hardware tab - highlight the dvd drive and click 'troubleshoot'.

Hopefully this will repair the drivers and you will be sorted.
