Internet Explorer 'Edit with Word'

In Internet Explorer (version 6), on the file menu there is sometimes a menu item ''Edit with Microsoft Word''. At other times this doesn't appear and instead there is a greyed out ''Edit''.

I suppose this depends on the type of webpage - can anyone tell me when it is available and when it is not?
