A warning occasionally appears telling me the virtual memory minimum is too low. Having looked at the settings under virtual memory it says 'Initial Size 288MB' and 'Maximum Size 576MB'. But I don't know what this means. Also, how can I check how much memory I have on my computer? Thanks!

I have XP. How can I see how much RAM I have? A friend of the family 'built' the computer for us, so I'm not sure!

To find out how much physical memory you have just right click on My Computer then left click on Properties, on the General tab at the botoom will be the amount of physical memory.

As for Virtual Memory - that is the amount of disk space that windows uses when it needs it - consider it as slow memory. If you are getting a message about lack of virtual memory, just go to where you read off the numbers and change the minimum amount - just change it to the same as the maximum amount. Dont forget to click Apply before exiting. You will have to reboot for the changes to take effect. The other option is to set the virtual memory to "let windows handle it" (something like that I forget the actual wording) and windows will keep changing the size to whatever it needs.

The total memory you have is the total of your physical memory + virtual memory.

Thanks very much! Apparantly I only have 192MB RAM - that's rubbish isn't it? I thought 256MB was minimum to look for really?
512MB I'd say. For XP anyway.
