Facebook Sound Problem On Smartphone

Recently, for some reason, videos and clips on the Facebook app on my phone have no sound. Volume is up and the phone is not on "mute" or "do not disturb". Nothing is attached to the headphone socket. Other sites have sound.

In Facebook settings I cannot find anything about how to adjust sound.

Any suggestions will be gratefully received.

You should find sound settings within the FB app - Settings & Privacy, then Settings, then Preferences, then Media.

Check your phone settings too - Settings - Apps - Facebook.

If that doesn't solve it, delete the app and reinstall it

Unsure if it is related related but, whenever someone sends me a link to something in social media, Facebook included, I find it has come in on mute, that an unmute item can be either difficult to find, or missing, and if found & hit, then find the phone or tablet volume has been set to zero somehow at the same time.  I've long concluded that such sites must be doing their utmost to put off anyone viewing their content.  Maybe you just need to search for some unmute facility on the screen.

The in-video mute/unmute icon is always bottom right in the videos I see on FB.  I want them to be muted automatically because I don't want random videos blaring out unexpectedly.

I would suggest one should turn the volume down before visiting. Missing the start due to enforced muting every time is a pain in the neck. At the least an option should be available in the essential cookie settings.

OG, in the FB app you have the option to click 'videos start with sound'.  Mine is set to 'off'.

FB app ????

Surely you don't expect me to have one of those. 😲😱  A browser opens when I try a link sent to me,

Barry1010, if I find my way to Media as you suggest, I only get options for "Data saver", "Photo quality" and "Autoplay"; nothing about sound or volume.

Under Autplay you should hvae 3 checkboxes, then a toggle for 'Videos start with sound'

Under that you should have a section 'Video and photo settings' with a toggle for 'Sounds in the app'

Can't explain that, Steve. What device are you using and what version OS?

In addition to other solutions, try restarting your phone, as this often resolves minor software glitches.

Question Author

Restarting the phone does not resolve the problem.

Yes, under Autoplay, there are the 3 checkboxes. "On mobile data and WiFi" is checked. There is nothing further under this.

Phone is a Redmi 10C, Android version 13 TKQ1.221114.001, Security update 2025-02-01

Have you looked at FaceBooks settings under Apps?

Question Author

Yes. The only reference to sound there is "Allow playing sound" which refers to notifications and is "on".

If I uninstall FB and re-install it, I assume that I won't lose my contacts and groups?

In my Android FB app, when I open settings - media and scroll down I have 'Videos start with sound'.

This is on my phone running Android 14, my tablet running Android 11 and my 7 year old iPad.

I don't know why your FB is different

That's correct Steve. You just log in and everything will be there

Question Author

Thanks for your help, Barry. It looks as though I need to uninstall and re-install FB.

I regularly do that anyway, Steve, with most of my apps.  If you look in your storage before deleting it you will probably see it is huge when you compare it to the re-install.  It clears a lot of accumulated, unneccesary rubbish in the app.

Question Author

Thanks for all the suggestions. Uninstalling and re-installing did the trick!

Woohooo!   That's a relief 😀
