From today, July 29th, Microsoft is giving a free Windows 10 upgrade to users of Windows 7 and 8. This offer is open for 12 months.

Windows 10 gets great reviews, but so did Vista and Win 8, both of which are now widely agreed to be dogs.

I've got Win 7 Ultimate, which isn't bad, so will wait and see for a while.

Mrs V has Win 8, so I'm going to upgrade in a few weeks after checking initial reactions - nothing can be worse than Win 8!

What are other Abers doing.

What are you doing Ab Editor , on your little concrete computer?

i'm on win 7 and reserved win 10 when i was offered it but haven't received anything yet?
I downloaded the w10 reservation in January ukbod and it now looks as if we are to be upgraded in 'waves'. I am wet enough after all that rain. I think will get an email from microsoft when our turn comes.
I guess being in the Ts we will have to wait a while - with something this size I guess their servers will struggle.
No end of september SP2 might be available by then
See my previous post on page 2. You will get an email when it is ready for you to download if reserved. You cannot expect it to be available to all on day one.

Extract from my email last week.

When can I upgrade to Windows 10?

We want to give every customer a great upgrade experience, so we’re rolling it out in an organized way to manage high demand and to make sure that the upgrade is right for your device. After July 29, when Windows 10 is ready for your device, it will download in the background. You’ll then get a notification to schedule your upgrade right away or at another time that’s convenient for you.

Hope this answers some questions.
thank you furry
May I point out that it might be worth checking "Windows Update / View Update History". I found 19 "Update Failed" messages this morning & had to work around the problem.
further update both our machines have acquired a background download in a folder marked $Windows.~BT - they contain 6gb of files not the 3 as specified - and when you click the setup it says there are files missing - no sign of an email notification yet.
ukbod - as far as I can tell from the Net, you shouldn't have tried to force the setup.exe to start yourself.

When you say the folder "$Windows.~BT" has 6gb of files, I believe - I reiterate I'm NOT an expert! - it means the files have downloaded successfully but the install failed - possibly because of a missing file as a result of trying the setup.exe. (?)

When you clicked the setup.exe in $Windows.~BT did you get an error message/failure code with it? Please DON'T try clicking it again if you can't remember!

Can you please check "Windows Updates / View Update History" to see if you have any "Update Failed" messages?

I'm at 89% of my own download at the moment so still don't know if the work around I used will be successful - please bear with me! You could also hope (as I am!) for a real techie to arrive :-))
The download had finished - clicking the link only had the effect of saying a file was missing - nothing else happened. I dont currently have a problem maybe there is more to come.
Took 14 minutes from start to finish. All good, no tinkering involved

Yes you can. You need to go in to settings by clicking the three dots at the top right of the screen, then click 'settings'.
Scroll down and click 'advanced settings'
Scroll down again and click 'search in the address bar with' and click 'new'.
Add Google and it's done

:)
am with ann in XP time warp, as I have the full Ms Office CD instead of just a code as with W8. XP is compatible to my new HP 5 printer & all my new gizmos
I've given up for today, download failed having killed my anti-virus & firewall, wrecked my Firefox settings & rearranged my desktop for me - wish I hadn't bothered trying now!
Still sitting here drumming my fingers waiting for the notifications
