I'm running windows 8 and after a recent crash (don't ask) it is all up and running again. The thing is, the windows logo that sits on the bottom left that you click on to get to the start screen has gone. Any idea how to get it back?

Are all the other usual icons along the bottom? If not, press the F11 key

Hi hc4361, the only other icons there are IE, File explorer and Cyberlink YouCam and I have added a couple since I last posted.
Pressing F11 just mutes the volume.
Try FN with the F11 key, I don't think it will work but it won't do any harm.

Have you tried rebooting? I've just had a thought - have you updated it W8.1?

Sorry it's taken so long to get back to you all but there's nothing but problems here.
Ok to answer your q's, You are correct in that I am now back to windows 8. So that sorts out the loss of the windows logo.
Yes it's a standard laptop (touchscreen) but I use a mouse with it.
No, no difference with FN & F11.
Now when trying to upgrade to 8.1 it tells me I need an update. I follow all the prompts but then everything freezes. I cant even shut down unless I do it manually.
I have run scans with my anti virus (avast), MWB, SAS and have run Ccleaner.
So for now I'm going to crack on with trying to upgrade to 8.1. I'm also going out soon'ish so I may not get back to you until later.
Thanks for your interest.

Phew, back again, sorry for the delay.
Had to get a pal in to help me. I could not update anything at all. Seems windows update was corrupt. HP (for that is the make of the laptop) site only let us update some things, I forget which. Eventually we got them all. After a while my pal managed to fix the windows update and it said I had 127 to download !!
That took ages but when it finished it still wouldn't update to windows 8.1
Back we went to the windows update and we now had 102 to do. After another eon we eventually got the windows 8.1update and that too took ages.
I think I have told you how it went. There was so much going on I'm sure I've forgotten some things but to be honest it was my pal and not me. I had given up by now.
Anyway it is all going swimmingly now.
Once again thanks all for your help and interest.
Thanks for the update, glad you're sorted
