I removed Real Player using 'add and remove', and the sound and volume control in the task bar went with it, is there anyone out there who can suggest a way of getting it back please? I have reintalled the complete XP, but no luck.

Thanks.

Sorry Kempie, tried that before, and now, it won't go, but thanks anyway.
Right click on the taskbar - check that it isn't locked.

Hi wideboy, no, its not locked.
Try uninstalling the sound card in system properties and the let windows find it again on a restart. Usually when hardware plays up (eg CD writers) that's what I do.

Afraid that one didn't work either, but thanks anyway.
Hav a look in C:\WINDOWS\system32 and see if there is a file called sndrec32.exe. If not, go on a P2P program like limewire, and download a file called sndrec32.exe (please make sure its not got a virus on it though, as it is a .exe file!) copy this file into the system32 folder (C:\WINDOWS\system32) it should re apear now:)

Thanks philtay, i'll have a look at that later, will post an answer to let you know how I got on.
Shouldn't that file be named sndvol32.exe which can be found on the installation CD?
Question Author
I've already used the installation cd, everything reinstalled,  except the sound.

If sndvol32.exe isn't in the C:\WINDOWS\system32 folder then you can extract it from the XP installation CD as follows:

Start a command session by clicking on the Start button then clicking on Run. In the Run box type cmd then click OK

Navigate to the CD-ROM drive by typing
cd d: (or whichever drive letter your CD drive is listed under)
press Enter

Navigate to the i386 folder by typing
cd i386
Press Enter
Now type expand -r sndvol32.ex_ C:\WINDOWS\system32
Press Enter

A copy of sndvol32.exe will now be found on your system.

Bl**dy formatting!

The command to expand the file should be on one line

expand -r sndvol32.ex_ C:\WINDOWS\system32
