Bought what I thought was a bargain, a 4GB SD card for my compact digi camera. Put it in as I have done with others nothing appears on screeen. Normally I have to set date and time.
On closer inspection of the packaging its "in small print" for video.
But I have been told I can format it by placing it in a card reader and connecting the reader to my PC. Any one confirm please. TIA.

Should be OK to format with your PC.

Does your camera not have a 'format sd card' option in the menu somewhere?

Thanks Dave will have to have a look to see.
Don't worry about the for video bit, some video recorders and cameras use SD cards and need a faster access time than still photos i if the card is good enough for video it's certainly good enough for your camera.

It doesn't sound like you've ever bought an extra card for your camera before - the only time I have to set the date and time is when I use a camera for the first time.

Most camera manufacturers state that the camera is the best place to format your card, NOT a computer. Your camera menu will have an option to format the card, together with a warning that all photos on the card will be deleted - just OK that because there are no photos on your card.
yes format it using PC in FAT32 format dont click on quick format ,click on complete format .it will be better
