What a pain in the posterior these updates are becoming. EVERY day the dialogue box pops up asking me to re-start to allow updates and every time I do it , it recurs the next day. What is to be done please? There is no update every few hours, is there??

There is no update every few hours (assuming it's Microsoft) but if the update fails for any reason or you switch off before it's complete it will restart next time you start up.

Why it's failing, if that's what is happening - pass
What operating system are you using? Windows XP and 7 allow you to download updates at a time convenient to you and to install them when you want to rather than automatically.
Look in Control Panel-.System and Security-> windows update

Thanks for the replies. There is a Windows shield in the tray and if I click on that there is Always an update to be downloaded and it does it and always asks me to re-start!! Just find it a pain.
If you go to the Windows Update page you can check your update history, to see if is failing and retrying the same update over and over again. That was happening to my mother in laws computer.

From the start button, go to programs and Windows Update should be near the top.
Alternatively - I have not allowed updates for three years and touch wood I have never had a problem. My Add and Remove is very tidy and obviously free of Microsoft Updates.
Go to Windows Update, then update history, then right-click the update & hide details. This then stops the update from downloading & installing.

that'll stop your computer from attempting to download this update.

I believe Optimo Pro is a Registry Cleaner and, like all other such programmes, I would Not suggest that it is an answer to problems which arise. In fact I would advise non technical folk to stay well clear of all Registry Cleaners which can cause irreversible damage to a computers operating system.
