Live.com Email Alerts Even When Browser Closed

I have a Mac operating OSX. I recently signed up to Live.com which I only use through a browser. However, if I send myself an email using the Mac's Mail program, and send it to my live.com account, I can hear the email alert that the email has been received - even though the browser is closed. Does anyone know how this can be possible?

Oops, discovered what's been happening. The alert is coming from my iPod (which I keep next to my computer) which sounds even when it's switched off.
