Why is it when I watching some tv programmes on bbc iplayer the sound is so low that I can not hear what is being said in spite of turning the volume up on the laptop. For example I have been watching the bbc2 series 'Dancing on the edge' the sound was fine when watching the first three episodes but episode four the sound was so low I could not hear what the actors were saying, it is the same thing with 4od, itv player and demand 5. Is it possible to increase the sound on the laptop without using any external hardware?. Thanks to any one who can help.

You mean you tried the volume mixer and maximised the volume ?

Question Author: Old_Geezer, both the volume and mixer are set high but the sound is still very low on some programmes.
There are often a number of places to alter the volume.

On the task bar bottom right, within the actual application (like iPlayer) and so on.

You need to check them all as one could override the other.
You could try checking this out, it or may not help!

'Windows Start>Control Panel>Hardware and Sound>Manage Audio Devices'

- You should then see a Window displaying the Audio Devices installed on your system . Highlight the name of the current active Audio devices something like 'Speaker / Headphones' but may be referenced different depending the type of speaker system / drivers installed.

- Select 'Properties' which will display some additional options such as 'Level, Custom, Enhancements, Advnaced' for the various Audio functions available on your system. Try 'playing around' with some of those settings to see if it makes a difference.

- If that does not work you could try checking on your Computer manufacturers support website to see if there are any more recent Sound drivers available for system and if so, download and install to check if it offers increased sound performance.

I find that you can accidentally alter the volume on i-player if you sweep the mouse cursor over i sometimes. If the laptop volume is cranked up, check the volume adjustment on i-player itself.
The following suggestion are from the current edition of 'Web User':

With BBC iPlayer, check that the on-screen slider is set to 11.

In Windows 7, go to the Control Panel and then to Hardware and Sound. In the 'Select a Playback Device' box, highlight the speakers then click 'Properties', 'Enhancements' and put a tick against 'Enable Loudness Equalization'.
