Not My Usual Taskbar Function

Just started today, my task bar when i used to run my mouse over open applications used to show page in minature and briefly enlarge to view/compare now instead all I get is a worded list which I have to click to open. If this makes sense to anyone what can I do to restore the function please

It might help people here if you told us which version of Windows you're using and (if appropriate/if you know it) which 'view' you're using (e.g. Windows Classic View').

However my first thought is to try right-clicking on a blank space on the taskbar to see what display options your version of Windows offers. (You might not see what you need directly. You might have to click on things like 'Properties' and/or 'Customize').
PS: If you get stuck, using System Restore will probably fix the problem for you.

try looking at the visual effects settings as shown in this http://www.everything-microsoft.com/2009/09/13/how-to-enable-and-use-windows-7-aero-features/ - i can't remember just which setting it is from when I last switched between the 2 types of display
The image preview is only available if Aero is enabled.

Sometimes an update to your video adaptor or a change of hardware will turn off aero.

Right-click a clear area of the screen and choose personalise.
Select a theme form the Aero section.
