very slow laptop! mine craft very slow!

I have an acer aspire laptop(not sure which one) it's in good condition and with no viruses. whenever I play mine craft or any other game it lags a GREAT deal. is there any way I can fix this? thanks

my little boy has a acer aspire 1 netbook and plays minecraft on it - he says it is a bit laggy, but I know that when he first played it it was so slow as to be unplayable, but he did something which seemed to help speed it up a bit - it can't be that bad as he seems to spend what time he is allowed on screen playing it and has built some fantastic stuff. He is only just turned 11, he seems to get get all his info on Youtube so it may be worth a search on there. I'll ask him in the morning if he knows what he did.

turn down the graphics and render distance

Yep, tap "F" to change the "fog" - this is the distance you can see, reduce it and you should see a bit of a speed increase.
