I am a 73 year old biddy I can use the computer for basics, surf the net, e mail etc but when it comes to jargon I am lost and have to rely on others if thigs go wrong, which I dont like to ask.
The local college is doing a course called Computers -pc maintenance and states - this is an introductory course open to anyone who is interested in learning about the "inside" of the computer and learning about basic trouble shooting techniques.
Would this be suitable for me pls - honest answers preferred.

Have you discussed it with the college. They will be best able to advise the level of existing knowledge necessary.
Depends on how technically minded you are. It sounds to me to possibly be hardware (boxes, leads, chips, boards, & stuff) related. Need the syllabus to be sure. Would that be what you want, or are you looking for knowledge more from a user's point of view? That asked, any course can be interesting, and act as a basis for further knowledge.
I think it will broaden your knowledge of how a PC works, thats gotta be good but it depends on what particular problems you are having really.

If it is software problems, how to do a spreadsheet etc, that course will be of little help.

Do the Course if you can, it should be a general help in many areas and an understanding of PC's
Hi Dee, do not get in to a hash with the jargon, if the truth is known Half on here do not understand the cr@p that gets said! & before any smart @rse comes out with it, that includes myself, as long as you know the basics, how to log on, how to sign in some helpful people on here will help you along, you do get the smart @rses that think they know it all but you will soon find these out, carry on as you are doing enjoy the site & the knowledge & banter, but take some advise, do not try to argue your point it only winds you up, if It gets to that stage switch off, make yourself a brew ( Cup of tea) its not worth the hazel, Good Luck & enjoy yourself, OH I forgot to say, we do have the correction brigade on here that will tell you about your spelling that's a big deal to them, so don't forget to use your spell checker. x
im not exactly sure of the details. but the bbc have a programme running, re introduction to computing. im sure there is a web site.. im like you i can only do " basic stuff "
"learning about basic trouble shooting techniques. " sounds worthwhile to me. Even of you still can't fix problems without help, it sounds like it may give you the knowledge and confidence to follow directions given by helpers on this site, for example.
^^ if, not of
Dee Sa I think you fall into a similar category to myself; both agewise and basic knowledge of computers.
Personally, I would forget about the inside of computers and keep posting on AB as you have been doing for the past six years. If things go wrong there are enough people in AB who will come to your aid, as they have done for me.

thanks for all the honest answers, I will go and talk it over with the college advisers and then decide, but to me even if I only learn a few bits it will be worth it, what I dont want to do is hold the class up, if I thought I was dong that I would quietly bow out anyway, Have I really been adding my two pennyworth for 6 years, my how time flies.

Does you local library have any books on computers? The "..... for Dummies" series is not that bad as a starting point.
Some web sites can also be interesting and helpful, but be careful of some of the adverts.
