I have an mp3 file on desktop and if I click on it windows media player opens and plays it, but I cannot add this file to the wm library and then add it to a playlist....any ideas?

Yes, disable Windows Media Player, download and instal K-lite codec pack and use their 'media player classic' console.

Alternatively, download the free "Format Factory" and convert the MP3 into a WMA file.
