my new WD portable hard drive wont come on with my pc

i have recently purchased a new WD 500GB portable hard drive,i am operating windows 7, i have plugged in the power supply and the usb to my computer but it isnt recognising it, any help please. thanks

Plug something you know works into the USB port to check the port is OK.

I may be wrong but portable hard drives don't normally come with a power supply? If you mean external hard drive then check your power supply is plugged in ok and that the hard drive is switched on.
As scotman suggests check your usb port or try another one.

What are you expecting the external hard drive to do? You wont get any message or window saying it is working.

Open "Computer" in Windows to see all your drives, and the external hard drive should be listed there. It may be a letter like G: or H:
