More and more sports venues seem to be having crap names foist upon them by their sponsors.

I've just discovered on another thread that The Oval is now called the Kia Oval.

It wouldn't be so bad if it was, say, the Bentley Oval.

"The Emirates" for some reason seems to work - maybe because it was never anything else.

The worst example, I think, is Lansdowne Road, which is now called

(hang on, I've forgotten ... I'll just Google it)

... yes, the "Aviva Stadium" !!

Lansdowne Road ... the ancient stronghold of Irish rugby.

I've been to Lansdowne Road with an Ex. England were a much better side, and completely dominated the game ... and lost to Ireland.

Why?

Because no matter how good you are, you do not come to Lansdowne Road and beat Ireland.

"You can play better than us, but we will still beat you."

Lansdowne Road was an intimidating fortress of patriotic Irishness ... (and, I should add, a very very jolly place to go).

A sporting graveyard for hopeful visiting teams.

But, hey ... what visiting teams could ever feel intimidated by somewhere called ...

... the "Aviva Stadium" ???

It's too comical.

Can't sponsors see the damage they are inflicting on our sporting heritage?

I'm just waiting for Smiths Lawn to become "Nissan Lawn"

Dave Whelan ... DW Stadium ...

So no big ego trip there, then !!!

I wonder if Brighton would consider the "JJ Stadium"

=0)
lol I was just thinking that, what an ego trip, its like a personalised plate
Dave Whelan rebranded a lot of JJB including superstores, Health Clubs and stadium previously JJB to DW a couple of yeras ago. He always owned JJB, but never knew what it stood for??
Question Author
JJB is Jogger Jayne Brand
JJ - I didnt realise, JJB - Ofcourse!
JJB stands for JJ Broughton, the original owner of the Wigan shop that Dave Whelan bought in 1971
As for duff stadium names, LA Galaxy's 'Home Depot Center' takes some beating.

Oh.

Not JJ Brand, then ?
It's the same at Headingley Cricket Ground The wrought iron gates installed now incorporate imagery of Pakistani men and women in the ironwork if memory serves me right.Although I've not seen and Asian ladies at the matches. They have obviously paid somewhat towards the gates. I don't think they would have the temerity to change the name of the ground.

Golly, I should think not, AYG !
Referring to the original question, this comes to mind:
http://www.colchesterstadiumexperience.com/
the 1954 World Cup Final was played at Young Boys of Bern stadium in Switzerland, which was named The Wankdorf Stadium
It used to be called The McAlpine stadium, a solid sounding name. Now its the Galpharm.
Preferred McAlpine.

Will there be nowhere left with a sensible name ???
I hope if/when a new stadium is built in Portsmouth, they change the name

Fratton Park..........backwards Krap nott arf !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
OH LOL Chaffinch
Leicester City have been sponsored by Walkers Crisps for many years. When the new stadium was built the powers that be seriously wanted to call it the Walkers bowl. Bowls of crisps on party tables came to mind.

I think most of us can live with Walkers Stadium, but a few of us still refer to it as Filbert Street.
