When I was a kid (with a pet dinosaur - it was that long ago), if anyone asked me which football team I supported I would answer "Tottenham Hotspur". I knew absolutely nothing about football but I reckoned that any team named after a kids' comic (The Hotspur) couldn't be all bad ;-)

I still know absolutely nothing about Spurs but, even after all these years, I've still got a soft spot for them.

However, having just taken a look at the BBC Sport pages to try to make sense of your post, ANY side that beats Man U is likely to be popular with most people, isn't it?

With apologies to Weecalf for going off topic - although the original post was hardly a serious 'question' anyway . . .

I was never a great fan of those comics which mainly had serials in them, GG. I only got to see them occasionally and (for example) just reading episode 29 of a 48-episode story didn't make much sense to me. After graduating from Jack & Jill and Playhour, my regular weekly reading consisted of The Topper and (my favourite) Buster. (I discovered the Beano and the Dandy later on but my mother disapproved of them, regarding them as only suitable for 'common' children - she was such a snob!)

My mother definitely disapproved of war stories, GG, and I never particularly liked them anyway. So 'Commando' wasn't for me.

true, Chris, my Mum always said Rupert was a better bear than Biffo. I was inclined to agree then and still do, he had much more interesting adventures even though aimed at a younger audience. Both drawn by very fine artists, though, Alfred Bestall and Dudley D Watkins.
